Ensemble Workshop Schedule Announced!

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

This summer the Pickin’ Porch will offer three workshops in ensemble playing.  The workshop series will conclude with a “field trip” to the Friday Night Jamboree for some parking lot picking on Friday June 25th.  Students will receive instruction in playing in a small group setting with several instruments and jamming.  Topics covered will include rhythm playing, soloing, arranging-on-the fly and jamming etiquette.  Special attention will be given to tuning, timing and taste.  Repertoire will include selections from a variety of American roots music styles including, blues, jazz, country, rock, old-time, bluegrass gospel and more.  Chord charts, lyric sheets and other printed material will be provided. This is an opportunity for intermediate students (those who have completed, or have almost completed, their Mel Book), to learn and practice how to play in a small ensemble. Depending on the level of participation, workshops will be sorted by age, ability and instrument.  Workshops will be one hour in length, meet three times (June 11, 18 & 25), and cost $20/ session. If there is interest, a second series of workshops will be scheduled.

The Pickin’ Porch to Become Full-Time Guitar Studio

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

On Saturday, May 2nd the Pickin’ Porch retail store will close. The Pickin’ Porch will remain a fretted instrument instruction studio at the Willis Avenue location.

Most of the store’s inventory will be placed on clearance: Inventory will be 25% off retail price April 16th – 23rd and 50% off retail price April 24th – May 2nd.

Last year, I placed the Pickin’ Porch for sale. I hoped to sell the store and dedicate more time and energy to my guitar students, family, farm chores and performance career. Several potential buyers inquired about purchasing it and two sought to relocate it to downtown Floyd. However, a tightening credit market and downtown politics conspired against the sale. Selling in this environment is unlikely, yet I need to move forward. (more…)
